9 tips to increase sow milk!

2020-11-10

Breast milk is the main source of nutrition for piglets within three weeks of birth and the material basis for piglet growth. Only by raising lactating sows to secrete enough milk can the piglets live longer and get the ideal weaning litter weight. And to ensure that the sows are in good physical condition and can be bred and conceived in time for the next reproductive cycle after weaning.

1. The process of lactation

1. Lactation of sows is an important part of production. Lactating sows have a heavy burden. In addition to maintaining their own consumption, they also produce 5-8 kg of milk every day. Improper feeding management will cause problems to sows and piglets. A series of adverse effects. The daily feeding amount of sows after delivery should be gradually increased, and the normal feeding amount should be restored to 5-7 days. Feeding should be started after 10 days, and feeding should be stopped after the peak of lactation.

  2. The sow has more than a dozen udders, and the amount of milk produced by different udders is different. The first few pairs of breasts have more mammary glands and ducts than the latter ones, and the amount of milk discharged is also higher, especially the 3-5 pairs of breasts have higher lactation. Piglets have the habit of sucking with fixed nipples. The weak piglets can be placed on the first couple of nipples with artificial assistance, so that the piglets in the same litter grow evenly.

   2. Nine measures to increase lactation

  1. Promote the development of all effective mammary glands and maintain the life-long lactation

The glandular tissue of the pig udder develops before two and a half years of age during the sow’s growth period. The development of the mammary glands mainly occurs during the lactation period. The development and activities of each part of the sow’s mammary glands are completely independent and parallel to the adjacent parts. No connection.

Piglets are used to sucking a certain fixed nipple shortly after birth, until weaning. If the primiparous sow has a small litter size, only 7-8 nipples, only 7-8 nipples can only develop this part of the nipples, and the remaining nipples will stop moving and reduce the volume, which will cause the remaining nipples to be in In the future, lactation is stopped or the milk production is low. Therefore, when the primiparous sow has a small number of litters, it is necessary to let some piglets form the habit of feeding two nipples from the beginning, so that all effective nipples can develop, so that it is possible to improve and maintain the sow’s lifetime lactation ability .

  2, balanced sow diet

When formulating lactating sow feed, it must be carried out in accordance with the feeding standards (nutrient requirements). First, it is necessary to ensure appropriate energy and protein levels. It is best to add a certain amount of animal feed, such as fish meal, meat and bone meal, etc. Material and vitamin needs, otherwise the sow will not only decrease milk production, but also easily become paralyzed. Increasing the feeding level in the late pregnancy and the first month of lactation can effectively promote the development of mammary glands and increase the sow's milk production.

The nutrient content of milk is rich and comprehensive. Only by supplying nutritious feed and ensuring sufficient drinking water can you produce high-quality milk; after sows return to normal feeding after delivery, they should also be fed more green and green to stimulate lactation. Juice feed to increase its milk production. But the green and juicy feed must be fresh, and the amount of feed must be from small to large. In particular, taking a green feed at night has a more significant effect on promoting lactation.

  3. Provide high-quality feed to ensure nutritional needs

To feed pregnant sows with nutritious full-price feed, the feed should be rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. If conditions permit, some animal feed can be fed, because it contains many types of essential amino acids and high biological value. During the lactation period, especially during the peak lactation period within 30 days after giving birth, in addition to adding fish meal to the feed, small fish and shrimp or livestock and poultry bone soup can be used to feed the sow.

  4. Feed regularly to promote more feed intake by sows

can be timed at 7-9 o'clock, 13 o'clock, and 20 o'clock. The feeding frequency is preferably 3 times a day, and the feed amount should be large in the morning and evening, which is beneficial to increase feed intake and increase lactation. Lactating sows are the most nutrient-required stage in the entire reproductive cycle. If they are still fed according to the empty or pregnant period, the nutrition they obtain is far from enough for milk production. Only under the premise of good feeding, can you meet the nutritional requirements of lactation and produce more milk. The feed during the lactation period should be relatively stable, and the feed variety should not be changed frequently, and the feed should not be moldy or deteriorated. Feed so as not to cause piglet diarrhea due to sow changes.

  5. Do a good job of reducing feed for sows before delivery and gradually adding feeds after delivery

Pregnant sows should not be overfed, especially if they are fed too much feed before farrowing. According to the individual situation of the sow, generally start to reduce the feed 5-7 days before delivery, and stop feeding on the day of delivery; drink bran water (1 part of bran plus 10 parts of water) 6-8 hours after delivery, 3-5 days after delivery Feed to the normal amount. Generally, if the feed is reduced 3 days before childbirth, it will be reduced by 1/3 every day; when feed is reduced for 5 days before childbirth, it will be reduced by 1/4 every day; when feed is reduced for 7 days before childbirth, it will be reduced by 1/3 every 2 days. When feeding in postpartum, feed 1 kg on the first day, then gradually increase, and add to 3.5-4.0 kg on the 7th day. After 1 week of stability, adjust according to the feed intake. While feeding sows, a lot of water should be given to increase lactation and lactation frequency.

  6, artificial breast massage

Primiparous sows lack milk due to insufficient lactation system development. Artificial breast massage can be used to promote mammary gland development. The main time is 2 weeks before delivery and 1 week after delivery. Before childbirth, once a day in the morning and at night, gently rub the breasts with your hands for 20 minutes each time; after childbirth, use a warm towel at about 45℃ to warm and massage the breasts, once a day in the morning and in the afternoon, 10 times each time Minutes can promote blood circulation in the udder of the sow and increase milk production. While massaging the breasts, you can also squeeze each breast to observe whether there is a blockage of the nipple hole. If there is, you can properly squeeze the nipple with your hands and squeeze the nipple out to achieve smooth lactation. According to reports, manual breast massage can improve piglet weaning by 5%-10%.

  7. Create a good living environment and increase the sow’s food intake

Production practice has proved that increasing the sow's feed intake is the key to increasing lactation. A suitable living environment is very helpful to increase feed intake. The pig house is required to be clean, bright, suitable temperature and humidity, and well ventilated. This requires heatstroke prevention and cooling in summer and cold prevention and warmth in winter.

Especially the high temperature in summer directly affects the feed intake of sows. According to research, while taking cooling measures, feeding sows with multiple meals can increase feed intake. Every day at 5 am, 10 am and 6 pm Feed once at 12:00 and 10:00 at night. When the weather is hot, spray water to cool down half an hour before feeding. The sow's feed intake can be increased by more than 18%. The suckling pig house should be kept warm, dry and hygienic. The excrement in the pen should be cleared in time, pig pens, walkways and utensils should be disinfected regularly; noise should be minimized and loud noises should be avoided.

   8. Protect the sow's breasts and nipples

Avoid all kinds of damage to the breasts and nipples of lactating sows, and prevent bacterial infections from causing mastitis and other diseases that affect lactation. Hot compress and breast massage can produce more milk. Hot compress and massage the breast of lactating sows can promote blood circulation in the breast and increase milk production.

  9, Chinese medicine promotes lactation

During the lactation period of sows, Chinese medicine can be used to induce lactation in sows that produce little or no milk. Traditional Chinese medicine is usually decocted in water, mixed in feed and fed twice a day for 3 days to invigorate the stomach and promote milk; if the sow is too thin and only secretes part of the colostrum, it will soon stop lactating, soy milk, fish soup, etc. Feeding with high-protein, easily digestible feed.

According to the following prescriptions: Codonopsis 50g, Astragalus 50g, Rehmannia 50g, Tongcao 40g, Pangolin 40g, Wangbuliuxing 50g and decocted with water. If sows have postpartum inflammation resulting in anorexia, lack of food, mental fatigue, breast swelling, and low or no milk, use motherwort 50g, angelica 30g, safflower 20g, chuanxiong 20g, and dandelion 50g while symptomatic treatment with antibiotics. 50g of honeysuckle is decocted with water, 1 dose a day for 2-3 days for adjuvant therapy, the effect is better.
